Alexus Edwards

2024 USTR Fellow | Mental Health Counseling, Bethune Cookman University

Alexus Edwards is a passionate advocate for mental health, currently participating in Fathers’ UpLift’s United States Therapist Recruitment Fellowship as an intern. Motivated by a deep commitment to mental health advocacy, Alexus seeks to support individuals facing emotional and psychological challenges, particularly within underserved communities where access to resources is often limited. Her academic journey has afforded her firsthand insight into the transformative power of effective counseling, and she is eager to gain practical experience that enables her to make a meaningful contribution to the field of mental health.

Alexus learned about Fathers’ UpLift through her professor, who reached out to students with information on the USTR Fellowship. Intrigued by the organization’s mission to reunite families and promote mental health awareness, she was drawn to the opportunity to work in an environment that aligns with her values and aspirations. She believes the work being done by Fathers’ UpLift is vital, particularly in its focus on empowering families while also addressing the needs of individual members.

Her ability to empathize deeply with others is one of Alexus’s greatest strengths, allowing her to connect with clients on a personal level. Rooted in her life experiences, this empathy is complemented by her strong communication skills, which foster an environment where clients feel safe to share their vulnerabilities. Additionally, Alexus possesses a solid foundation in psychology, equipping her with evidence-based techniques to support her therapeutic practice. Her resilience, shaped by navigating her own life challenges, serves as a model of perseverance and hope for her clients. A commitment to lifelong learning further fuels her desire to stay informed about best practices and emerging research in mental health.

As a future therapist, Alexus aims to ensure that her clients never feel alone or unsupported. She seeks to create an atmosphere of compassion where families feel cared for and understood throughout their therapeutic journeys. Her vision is to leave a lasting impact by fostering love and authenticity in every encounter, whether during sessions or through casual check-ins, thereby enhancing clients’ overall well-being.

Alexus’s personal journey significantly influences her passion for therapy. Raised in a situation marked by her father’s incarceration from a young age, she experienced the profound effects of family separation. This difficult chapter in her life deepened her understanding of mental health struggles and solidified her desire to support others dealing with similar traumas. She feels a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to help others navigate their emotional challenges.

Recognizing the unique attributes she brings to therapy, Alexus describes her “secret sauce” as a combination of empathy, emotional intelligence, creativity, and adaptability. She has developed a culturally sensitive and trauma-informed approach to therapy, allowing her to serve clients from diverse backgrounds effectively. Some of her notable accomplishments include mastering trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy and trauma-sensitive mindfulness practices, equipping her to address the needs of clients who have experienced significant challenges.

As she prepares to embark on her journey as a therapist, Alexus is excited about the potential to foster personal growth and emotional healing in her clients. She understands the importance of providing a safe and confidential environment where individuals can express their feelings openly and without judgment. Through actively listening and supporting clients in setting and achieving realistic goals, Alexus aims to empower them to take active steps toward personal development and improvement.

Dedicated to community involvement, Alexus engages in volunteer work on weekends, taking individuals she works with to volunteer at the Grace Community Food Pantry in Palm Coast, Florida. This experience allows her to connect with others while contributing to essential services that uplift those in need.

With a heartfelt appreciation for the opportunities she has been given, Alexus Edwards is committed to making a positive impact in the lives of those she works with. Her journey in therapy reflects both her personal experiences and her unwavering dedication to mental health advocacy, positioning her as a transformative figure within her community.
