Leanne Prendergast

2024 USTR Fellow | Master of Social Work Degree, University Of Houston

  • Leanne Prendergast on LinkedIn

Leanne Prendergast is a dedicated advocate for mental health and social justice, currently participating in Fathers’ UpLift’s United States Therapist Recruitment Fellowship. Leanne’s inspiration to engage in this fellowship stems from her desire to deepen her clinical skills and gain exposure to therapeutic practices that emphasize the importance of accessibility, particularly for individuals within the BIPOC community. She sees the opportunity as a transformative platform not only to learn from experienced Black leaders in the therapy field but also to better serve diverse populations, including men and fathers, in her future practice.

With a passion for transforming personal adversity into societal change, Leanne co-authored the self-help book “Getting to Know Me” at the age of 14, inspired by her own experiences with bullying. This work provides invaluable support for girls, their families, and support workers in identifying the signs of bullying and finding effective help and resources. Her book not only showcases her early commitment to advocacy but also highlights her deep empathy for individuals grappling with similar challenges.

Furthermore, Leanne has delved into extensive research and program development, focusing on asset-based strategies to combat the increasing rate of mental health disorders in girls and addressing all forms of racism and social injustice. She has presented her findings and programs to prestigious institutions, including the Ministry of Education, the United Nations, and through platforms like TED Talks. Her organization, Love Our Lives, a non-profit based in Ontario, provides programs, research, assessments, training, and consultation services to universities, educational boards, public service associations, and corporations.

Throughout her career, Leanne has consistently demonstrated her commitment to improving the lives of young women. She offers workshops, seminars, and programs within schools and community events to address the effects of bullying and to build self-esteem and confidence among girls. By actively engaging with families, educators, and mental health professionals, she strives to create a collaborative network that fosters growth and resilience.

Leanne’s contributions have been recognized by various media outlets and officials. She has received numerous awards, including the Commonwealth Youth Award, the Top 20 Under 20, the Attorney General’s Victim Services Award of Distinction, the Leading Women Building Communities Award, and the Harry Jerome Award. She is also a Fellow of the Royal Commonwealth Society.

Academically, Leanne holds a Master of Science in Community and International Development and has received certifications from Penn Law, Harvard University, the British Council, and the University of Cambridge. Currently, she is furthering her studies at the University of Houston on a full scholarship, researching effective mental health interventions. She hopes to implement new and relevant models within the education system to address the travesty of mental health disorders among women of color globally.

Leanne Prendergast’s multifaceted background in education, writing, and advocacy is a testament to her versatility and passion for understanding and combating mental health issues and social injustices. Her ability to connect with and empower individuals, alongside her dedication to furthering knowledge in the field, positions her as a valuable asset in promoting holistic well-being and supporting those in need.
