Joined Fathers’ UpLift: 2021 (Internship), 2022 (Clinician)

Responsibilities: Shakina assists people of color, primarily fathers, in their healing process while navigating systems such as the criminal justice system and the Department of Family Services. She provides individual therapy to help men of color overcome mental health and substance use disorders.

Role: As a Clinician, Shakina plays a critical role in supporting the mental health and recovery of fathers, helping them navigate complex systems and providing therapeutic interventions.

Staff Narrative:

Shakina Coplin is from Dorchester, Massachusetts. She began her college career at Bunker Hill Community College, where she received an Associate’s degree in Psychology. She then earned a B.A. in African Studies and Psychology from the University of Massachusetts Boston and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Boston University.

Throughout her educational journey, Shakina worked in security to pay her way through school. She has interned and volunteered at several non-profit organizations, including Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, The Dimock Center, The Home for Little Wanderers, and Fathers’ UpLift. Working at Fathers’ UpLift marks the start of her professional career, and she is proud to be the first person in her immediate family to earn a graduate degree.

Why Fathers’ UpLift? Shakina values the organization’s commitment to supporting fathers of color in their healing process and appreciates the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on their lives.

If I could invite anyone to dinner, it would be: Malcolm X.

When she’s not at Fathers’ UpLift, Shakina enjoys spending time with her family, engaging in community activities, and continuing her professional development in social work.
