USTR Fellowship Launch – Letter from the Founders

Empowering the Future of Mental Health: Fathers’ UpLift’s Founders on the United States Therapist Recruitment Fellowship – Samantha Fils-Daniels and Dr. Charles Daniels

Fathers' UpLift 2023 USTR Fellowship Cohort

Being aware of the importance of diversity and representation from people of color in the mental health sector, my wife Samantha and I, the visionary founders of Fathers’ UpLift, have embarked on an inspiring endeavor.  We have launched a new fellowship program, the United States Therapist Recruitment (USTR) Fellowship. This non-traditional fellowship program aims to support aspiring therapists in becoming licensed mental and behavioral health professionals.

Mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, and yet, access to quality therapy services remains a challenge for many communities, particularly those of color. We recognized factors behind this disparity through our own experiences in our clinical education, as we navigated school curriculum and each had to take the licensing exam multiple times until we passed it. Through our fellowship program, we are committed to partnering with future therapists on their journey toward success.

One of the primary goals of the United States Therapist Recruitment Fellowship is to provide financial support to Fellows during their Master’s and Doctorate studies. Each Fellow is provided with a stipend, which ensures that aspiring therapists can focus on their education without undue financial burden, allowing them to dedicate themselves to their studies and training fully.

However, the Fellowship goes beyond just providing financial assistance. Samantha and I understand that mentorship and guidance are crucial in helping future therapists overcome barriers and achieve their goals. Through our established network, we aim to empower each Fellow, ensuring they receive the necessary guidance and support to pass licensing exams, obtain licensure, and eventually open their own facilities or private practices.

For this Fellowship program, we have emphasized uplifting practitioners of color. Recognizing the underrepresentation of diverse voices in the field, we are committed to creating a network that supports individual success and fosters a community that uplifts each other.

We will create a ripple effect by providing these aspiring therapists with a platform to connect, share knowledge, and inspire. In doing so, our astounding Fellowship recipients become more than just beneficiaries; they become catalysts for change, helping to break down the systemic barriers that have impeded professional success for people of color in the mental health sector.

Furthermore, as the Fellows graduate and enter professional practice, they contribute to a more inclusive mental health and behavioral health field. By bringing their unique perspectives and experiences to their work, we know that they will better serve their communities and inspire future generations of therapists.

Mrs. Michelle Obama once told me, along with my brothers and sisters who were also Obama Fellows in 2019, to not get to a table and forget to bring others along. In our efforts with this Fellowship, we boldly put her words to action, thus empowering individuals with the skills and resources they need to make a difference in the lives of others as future therapists of color.

Together, and through this gesture, we are creating an inclusive and equitable society while highlighting the importance of equal opportunities and diverse perspectives, embracing the transformative power of diversity in healthcare, and fostering a more inclusive and compassionate world for all.
